The New York City Department of Education released the results of the state English language arts and math test scores for city students.  

The results give an insight into how the pandemic potentially disrupted children’s education, as math scores for grades declined, with 7.6% fewer students passing this year than in 2019.  

In ELA, 1.9% more students passed. Substantially fewer third and fourth grade students passed than in 2019.  

In the Bronx, ELA numbers remained the same, but third and fourth graders saw a 10% decrease in passing students. 10% fewer students from grades 3 through 8 had passing math scores.  

In Brooklyn, there were 3% more passing ELA scores, but a similar decline in passing scores from third and fourth grade students was visible. Students grades 3 through 8 saw a 7% drop in passing math scores. 

The Department of Education’s deputy commissioner released a statement today, calling the results “unacceptable” and that they are focused on “transforming education."

The scores presented do not include charter schools. Approximately 1 in every 10 students opted out of either the math or reading exam this year.
