Zohran Mamdani's stunning upset over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the NYC mayoral primary is dividing Democrats and sparking a lot of reaction.
Many city politicians are offering congratulations and looking ahead to working with the Democratic Socialist, including the top two Democrats down in Washington, D.C. — Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
However, other Democrats from the suburbs aren't offering their congrats.
Multiple lawmakers on Long Island released statements expressing concerns, calling the 33-year-old "too extreme."
Current Mayor Eric Adams didn't hold back when asked about the results on Fox News.
"He's a snake oil salesman. He will say and doing anything to get elected," said Adams. "Think about this for a moment, he wants to raise taxes on the one percent of New Yorkers with high incomes. As the mayor, you don't have the authority to do that. You know who has the authority to do that? An assemblyman, which he is. He wants to do free buses; he could've done it as assemblyman. He doesn't understand the power of government."
Even President Donald Trump is weighing in on the New York City mayoral race, posting on Truth Social and calling Mamdani "a 100% communist lunatic."
