All outdoor New York City public pools are opening today despite a lifeguard shortage.

Parks Department officials say they have approximately 650 lifeguards. They say they had a peak of 1,400 lifeguards several years ago.

Last year, it was 900.

Pools will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a one hour-break from 3-4 p.m. for cleaning.

There are 53 public outdoor pools open across the five boroughs with nine of them in the Bronx and 14 of them in Brooklyn.

Olympic size pools will stay open through Sept. 10. All other pools close on Labor Day.
