Mayor Eric Adams, Attorney General Letitia James and Rev. Al Sharpton joined other leaders at the National Action Network headquarters for a public safety summit.
This summit comes just a few hours after the NYPD released new crime data for 2022.
Overall crime rose more than 20% from 2021 to 2022, with murders declining by 11%.
City officials took the opportunity today to emphasize those to look at the monthly statistics, particularly for December of 2022. In comparison to December 2021, rape, murder, burglary, and robbery all happened at a much lower rate, with hate crimes nearly decreasing by half.
Grand larceny auto skyrocketed up by 34%, and transit crimes saw a slight rise in 2022.
Officials stressed the positives of these statistics, noting that the fourth quarter of 2022 saw less crime than the fourth quarter of 2021 – one month prior to the start of Adams’ tenure.
“We did not stumble into these decreases,” said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell. “They were not happenstance. We strategized, planned, deployed, recalibrated when necessary, conducted investigations, and relentlessly followed up.”
Sewell added that the city has a lot of work to do, and that today’s summit will help officials paint a clearer picture of what New York City needs regarding improving public safety.
