Kids from across New York City went head to head on the tennis court Friday in the Middle School Summer Smash Tournament.
Seven middle schools from the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens entered a Round Robin-style tournament to get players excited about the sport and the U.S. Open.
The tournament is part of the Mayor Dinkins Cup, which is the largest free junior interscholastic tennis competition in the nation. The players are from the community tennis program with New York Junior Tennis & Learning, which works in partnership with the Summer Rising program.
Kids spent the summer learning the fundamentals of tennis - from serving to using a backhand.
Elementary school teams play on Aug. 16.
