Mayor Eric Adams and New York’s senators announced a new $25 million plan to install e-bike charging and storage stations across the city.

This comes in the wake of many cases of e-bike fires destroying property. The latest incident occurred Saturday night on 161st Street in the Bronx.

Authorities say 108 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries used to power e-bikes and scooters occurred this year. Those accidents resulted in 13 deaths.

Officials say the charging stations will be installed at 33 different NYCHA developments in the Bronx. They will be installed outside of the buildings and be able to serve up to 67 residents at each station.

The city will install 173 stations at 53 developments with the initial funding. By the time of the plan’s completion, there will be more than 300 stations across nearly half of the NYCHA houses in the city.

Adams says this effort will help keep New York residents safe from more e-bike fires.

"The charging service station made possible by the Raise Grant are crucial to keeping New Yorkers safe and protected. The grant is part of a suite of efforts of our administration has taken to reduce the chance of lithium-ion battery fires,” he said.
