New data released by the New York Civil Liberties Union shows officers are more likely to stop, arrest and search Black and Latino drivers in traffic stops.
The NYCLU obtained the information after suing the NYPD for access to their traffic stop records. The records show Black and Latin drivers accounted for 32% and 29% of traffic stops.
The NYCLU says the courts have granted police officers complete freedom when making traffic stops.
News 12 reached out to the NYPD several times for comment but has not received a reply. In the past, the NYPD has said they carry out all of their work without consideration of race or ethnicity. They have also said the NYPD doesn't direct officers to make a certain number of stops.
