A woman was apprehended by police after they say she left two children inside of a closed car with the engine off in University Heights on Thursday afternoon.
Police say that the incident took place just before 10 a.m. when the mother left her two children, ages 7 and 10, inside of a car that was off and closed. Officers say they were unable to access the car when they arrived at the scene near 86 West 183rd Street.
Photos show the mother of the two children in police custody. That mother has been identified as Haniyah Agoro. She now faces one charge of manner to cause injury to a minor.
Neighbors say they made the discovery of the two kids in the car when they tried to move their cars. They were blocked in by the double-parked vehicle with the kids in the back seat.
Surveillance video shows the sedan double park and idle for two minutes before the mother gets out of the car. Eighteen minutes later, police arrived.
The two children were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for further evaluation but are expected to be OK.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the inside of a car can reach 109 degrees in just 20 minutes on an 80-degree day.
