Police say the mother who is accused of leaving her two children inside of a closed car Thursday afternoon has been identified.
According to the NYPD, 34-year-old Haniyah Agoro is in custody and facing two counts of acting in a manor injurious to her 7-year-old and 10-year-old children.
Agoro is accused of leaving her children inside of a car parked under the beaming sun at West 183rd Street in University Heights. Surveillance video shows the car sitting on the street for 18 minutes before police showed up and found the kids in the back seat with the engine off and windows rolled up.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, kids being left in parked cars under hot temperatures is the leading cause of death among children as parents often simply forget their kids are even in the car when they hop out.
Police say thankfully neither one of Agoro's kids were injured.
As the Bronx faces another day of extreme heat, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says to make sure everyone leaves the car, even for quick errands. Also, drivers are reminded to double-check the back seat for sleeping babies and to always keep your car keys away from children.
