The NYPD says officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man Thursday night in the Wakefield section of the Bronx. 

Police say plainclothes officers were stopped at a traffic light on East 233rd Street and Barnes Avenue around 6:15 p.m. when they observed a dispute on the street and people were yelling for help. 

They say an officer exited their vehicle and observed a woman on East 233rd Street with a man going after her in the middle of the street, with a large knife. 

Police say both officers identified themselves as police numerous times and yelled to the man, “Drop the knife.”

Police say the man turned around and ran toward the officers while still armed with the large knife. 

Both officers fired a total of five to six rounds and struck the man, according to police. 

The man was transported to Montefiore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Police say numerous other knives were recovered at the scene and on the man while he was in the hospital. 

Police say the man and woman knew each other and that they had a dispute on Wednesday, with the man threatening to kill her for not calling him, but she got away. 

They say when the woman saw the man again on Thursday, he approached her and the dispute escalated. 

Police say a few people tried to intercede in the dispute Thursday night before the woman ran and officers were able to respond. 

The woman was not injured, according to police.
