Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect who opened fire Monday night in East Flatbush and injured an 84-year-old woman.
Authorities say the victim was sitting on the corner of Brooklyn and Foster avenues with her walker when a stray bullet struck her left arm.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. outside of the Flatbush Gardens Community Center near Cristo Rey High School.
Witnesses told News 12 that they saw someone in the area draw a gun and begin firing at the time of the incident.
The woman was hospitalized and is expected to be OK, according to police.
Officials say the bullet was not intended for the woman. However, the reason for the gunfire remains unclear as of Tuesday afternoon.
Councilmember Farah Louis made a statement reacting to the incident. It read in part, "It is despicable that an elderly person was harmed in such senseless violence and it's appalling that gun violence continues to become a common theme in our communities."
