An investigation is now underway at Rikers Island after the Department of Correction says there were procedural violations related to an inmate's death.
The DOC says Felix Taveras reported medical conditions to the staff just before midnight Monday.
Taveras was brought in for medical care and later transferred to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 1:30 a.m. The Department of Correction also adds that suspensions will be issued in relation to Tavera's death.
The cause of his death remains under investigation.
