Parents accused of keeping their children in deplorable conditions inside their Kingsbridge apartment appeared in court on Thursday.
Charlotte and Wilfred Lewis are facing several counts of endangering the welfare of a child, among other charges.
News 12 cameras captured rats feeding on discarded food and flies buzzing inside the apartment, where police say the parents had their four children living in filth and squalor. Police say the couple's 5-year-old son was left home alone, surrounded by trash, vermin and feces on the walls.
According to investigators, a UPS worker flagged down an officer and notified them about the conditions after the couple's 5-year-old opened the front door for a package. Their four children, the oldest being a deaf and mute 15-year-old, have been removed from the apartment and are now in the custody of the Administration for Children's Services.
Charlotte was released on bond and her husband remains in jail.
Both parents have decided not to testify before a grand jury.
