Community members and officials rallied Monday to show support for city libraries and to demand funding that has been slowly diminishing.
Libraries across New York City have had to endure a 20 percent cut in funding over the past decade.
The city is being allocated $100 million to spread across about 200 libraries.
The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library systems are joining forces to propose $1.4 billion in funding for maintenance and restoration and an additional $65 million for operating expenses.
There will be an executive hearing held on June 8 where the presidents of the three library systems will formally discuss the proposal. A decision should be made by July 1.
