For weeks, Long Islanders have had to deal with rain on the weekends, changing plans and keeping people inside. Finally, on the last weekend of October, there was sun – and it helped bring thousands to the Schmitt’s Family Farm for its Fall Festival.
“It’s so amazing and hot, it feels like summer again,” Dahlia told News12 while exiting the venue after a day of family fun.
Aliza Kayani brought her kids out to enjoy the weather.
“We are here because the weather hasn’t been great all month so this is the only good day to come to the farm and take the kids out,” she said.
Owners and managers of Schmitt’s, which is a family-owned business, were thrilled to see so many people.
“The weather has been rough this season but we are ready to go,” said Scott Stoner, the general manager of Schmitt’s Farm Haunt, the haunted attraction side of the farm. “We are expecting a big crowd tonight so if you’re coming down, come early.”
Since late September, the farm has run a fall festival with pumpkins, tractor rides and plenty of family fun during the day. At night, the site gets spooky with haunted attractions like a haunted house and ax throwing.
Stoner says the farm relies on these fall events to survive the rest of the year but it’s been tough due to all of the rain.
“We are a seasonal business, so it really brings the people in, and this is our livelihood,” he said. “I think all of Long Island has reaped the effects of horrible weather we have been experiencing on prime nights so the fact that the weather is beautiful. I think everyone should come out.”
The Fall Festival at Schmitt's Family Farms located at 26 Pinelawn Road in Melville will remain open through Oct. 30. The haunted attractions will stay open one extra day for Halloween.
