Families in Bethpage were forced from their homes overnight Tuesday after a gas leak in their neighborhood.
Police say a car crash on Central Avenue at about 1 a.m. ended with the vehicle hitting a gas line and causing a leak.
Some residents had to evacuate after the natural gas smell was noticed, but have since been allowed to return.
National Grid officials say the leak was made safe by closing four valves just before 4 a.m. No customers lost gas service.
They say a total of four houses were evacuated by police, but only as a precaution.
A specialty National Grid was required at the scene, along with Nassau police, who helped with the traffic flow.
Police say the driver was taken from the scene safely, but the cause of the crash is unknown.
