A
Watertown teen is accused of breaking into a classmate’s home and attacking her
with a hatchet.
Police
say the 16-year-old attacker, who has not yet been named, entered the victim's
home on Morris Town Line Highway around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
They
say he caused her severe injuries with a hatchet, then jumped from a
second-floor window when confronted by her family and fled into nearby woods.
Police
say the suspect surrendered peacefully a few hours later thanks to his close
relationship with a school resource officer.
"Our
school resource officer assigned to Watertown High was familiar with the offender
and was able to make telephone contact. Due to the offender trusting the school
resource officer, the suspect cooperated and made his location known, at which
time he was taken into custody,” said Chief Joshua Bernegger.
The
teen faces attempted murder and burglary charges. He was arraigned in
Torrington Superior Court Thursday morning.
The
victim was treated at a hospital and released. A
GoFundMe campaign has been created to aid in her recovery.
Police
say when the attacker was taken into custody, he had a hatchet, kitchen knife,
duct tape and binoculars in his backpack.
The attacker and victim are both students at Watertown
High School. Police say the suspect may have been motivated by unrequited love.
They says he had an “obsession with
this particular female victim which led him to this crime."
"The female victim had mentioned her concern to her
parents, but I don't think it left the household,” the chief said.
