Police say a 52-year-old woman is dead after she was shot multiple times by a man on a bike in City Island Wednesday.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. at City Island Avenue and City Island Road.

Police say a 67-year-old man on a bike shot the woman and then tried to leave the scene. The woman's boyfriend then tried to stop the suspect by running him over with his car.

John Garisto was driving over the bridge and pulled his car over to help and realized there was more to the chaotic scene.

"I realize the guy's telling me he's got a gun, he's got a gun, he shot my friend," said Garisto.

He helped hold down the gunman with the woman's boyfriend who was driving the car until police came.

Garisto said the man in the car then went to check on the woman who looked lifeless.

Police say she was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Jacobi Hospital.

The shooter was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

Garisto also said a construction worker on site told him the man on the bike brought the construction worker who he shot lunch every day.

Police are investigating.
