Port Jefferson residents raised concerns Monday about a proposed project to build 33 new houses near a toxic plume.
Neighbors attended the Town of Brookhaven's Planning Board hearing to let the board know about their concerns about what lies under the Lawrence Aviation property - which sits next to the proposed site.
Residents are asking for an updated environmental study to be done before the Oak Street Subdivision Project takes effect.
"We'd like to know for sure that if they do this construction, it won't disrupt in any way, the toxic plume that's in the area," says John Leanza, of Port Jefferson.
An engineer surveyor addressed the concerned during the hearing, saying, "it does not pass underneath the site and the elevation of the plume is significant below anywhere a basement would be."
People also brought up crumbling infrastructure and traffic concerns.
"There is no way the amount of traffic increase that has coming in, unless the entire gets fixed, is going to sustain that kind of traffic," says Salvator Pitti, of Port Jefferson Station and Terryville Civic Association.

The board voted to close the hearing after around 25 minutes.
They could be voting on what is next for this site as early as next week.
