Preston High School is opening its door Wednesday morning for orientation so incoming freshman have a chance to meet each other and other students before the first day.
This comes after months of uncertainty on whether the school was going to stay open. Preston was saved from closure in April when the Bally’s Foundation purchased the school for $8.5 million. It will lease it back to the Sisters of Divine Compassion for just $1 a year. The deal ensures the school will stay open for at least the next 25 years.
Thursday is the first day of school for both catholic and public schools here in the Bronx. It's important to exercise extreme caution when driving in school zones and around stopped school buses. It is the law to stop when their red lights are flashing. If you don't you may be faced with over $200 in fines. Also avoid distractions as children can pop up unexpectedly from between parked cars.
Things may look a little different this year at Bronx public schools with the statewide a cellphone ban in place. This doesn't mean they can't bring their phones to school, they're just not supposed to be seen. Phones are to be stored throughout the entire school day - schools all came up with their own plans on how to execute this. Learn more about the policy here.
