Protesters celebrated the release of Javier Castillo Maradiaga, of the Bronx, from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.
Dariela Moncada says she was "super, super happy" as her brother, Maradiaga, was released from an ICE detention center Thursday, after he was taken into custody in 2019.
She stood with protesters at Grand Army Plaza to demand permanent protection for 11 million undocumented immigrants across the nation.
"Family separation doesn’t start at the border it starts here, where immigrant workers are detained and also put in concentration camps, detention centers," she says.
Protesters also made a stop outside the home of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
While a federal judge indefinitely banned President Joe Biden's administration from enforcing a 100-day moratorium on most deportations, protesters say something still needs to be done.
