A small group of protesters, marching from Crown Heights to East New York were led by some of the city’s young demonstrators, who say they’re picking up the baton of the late representative and civil rights activist John Lewis, whose funeral was Thursday.
The march against gun violence comes just after the family of 1-year-old Davell Gardner Jr. laid him to rest and days after a 16- and 18-year-old were both shot and killed in Carrol Gardens.
In southern Brooklyn, the NYPD reports a 70.6% increase in murder compared to this same time last year.
In the city as a whole, this year to date, the NYPD reports 227 murders. That’s up 29% since last year.
Protesters tell News 12 the shootings didn’t spike until 50a was repealed.
They want the government to invest in Black communities to stop the violence.
This week marks over two months since protests began.
