Community members and local officials rallied for safer streets in Riverdale Friday after a pedestrian was struck and killed earlier this week.
On Tuesday, an MTA bus struck and killed 68-year-old Ruth Mullen. Neighbors tell News 12 they are scared and fed up with drivers running a stop sign and speeding near the Kappock and Johnson intersection.
Mullen was struck as the bus was making a left-hand turn. Neighbors are now calling for a traffic light to be installed at the intersection.
Police tell News 12 the driver stayed on scene. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a statement saying, "Our condolences and deepest sympathy go out to the family of the woman who did not survive an incident involving a bus in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. It's heartbreaking, we won't rest until the facts and cause are determined.”
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and City Council member Eric Dinowitz say they’ve both spoken to the Bronx Department of Transportation about the need for safety improvements and have requested traffic and light studies.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation for a statement and hasn’t heard back yet.
