Bethpage High School’s Regal Eagles robotics team is preparing for a regional event with a pre-season scrimmage.
Hundreds of students from 21 schools across Long Island and Hudson Valley came to the 5th annual Regal Eagles Rampage.
The gathering gave teams a chance to test run their robots in preparation for the Long Island regional event at Hofstra University between March 20 to 25.
“It's an opportunity for teams to finetune and calibrate their robots. It’s really to get data on what things that they can correct and modify before the regionals in the weeks ahead,” said Bethpage Schools Director of Technology Andrew Choi.
Students say they enjoy showing off their robots and learning about teamwork with their peers.
“I love the analytical thinking of programming,” said Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School student Sage Prinstine. “You get to figure out where the issues are and get a game plan to solve it.”
“Not everything works the first time. Whenever something goes wrong, we may be worried about it, but I learn something new. We all learn something new and that's what I absolutely love,” said student Umesh Ponugupati.
Many of the student present say they hope to pursue technology and engineering careers in the future.
