Relatives of a man who died while being taken into police custody in 2014 met with the Department of Justice in Downtown Brooklyn Wednesday for an update on the civil rights probe into his death.
Eric Garner died after he was placed in what appeared to be a choke hold by an NYPD officer. A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict the officer on criminal charges.
The officer initially confronted Garner for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. The Justice Department has spent the last two years investigating whether Garner's civil rights were violated.
Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, says the family still doesn't know whether the officers involved will be held accountable.
"We shouldn't have to wait like this," she says.
