Flatlands residents gathered on Wednesday night to remember a first responder with more than four decades as an EMT and paramedic. 

Cpt. Joe Marcelino dedicated his life to helping people at Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and unfortunately lost his life due to COVID-19 back in November. 

His co-workers are dedicating this night to honor his life and legacy. The people who knew him best all say he was a man dedicated to helping people in Brooklyn as he began his EMT career 44 years ago before working his way up to captain.  

Chaim Rottensteim says he worked closely with Marcelino and watched as he took on a number of roles and encouraged others to always work hard. 

“He should be remembered as a mentor,” said Rottensteim, acting safety officer for the Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance Corps. “He was a friend, a mentor, and someone I look up choice a father figure, but also has a friend.” 

Co-workers, family, and friends alike say Marcelino’s personality shined bright even on the darkest days during the pandemic. He leaves behind parents, a wife, and a young son.
