A recent study shows that receiving food stamps may be difficult for eligible Bronx residents.
The report says problems with the application process keep half of the two million New Yorkers who are eligible for food stamps from actually receiving them. Supporters of a new plan are calling for online applications and extended night and weekend hours at food stamp offices. They also want applications available at soup kitchens, food pantries and senior centers.
City leaders say that steps have been taken to increase the availability of stamps to hungry New Yorkers. They say the study shows that there is still much to be done.
