Two retired NYPD officers are helping preserve the legacy of Sept. 11 through a new memoir titled "The Big One: Reflections of an NYPD Lieutenant."

The book shares the firsthand experience of New York's Finest Nicholas Bavaro, from Long Island and the response efforts at ground zero on the day of the terrorist attacks and during the many days that followed.

Joe Badalamente, of Tappan in Rockland County, wrote it.

They both said the writing process was cathartic, giving them an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and the impact of the attacks.

"I hope someone finds comfort in it. I hope someone finds the humanity," said Bavaro.

Badalamente said he hopes the younger generation will learn and understand the importance of Sept. 11.

"The book somehow transmits the horror of that day. The horror, the heroism and the resilience. Not just of the first responders but of everyone," Badalamente said.

"The Big One: Reflections of an NYPD Lieutenant" was released last week ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

It's available for purchase on Amazon.
