Kids in Greenpoint were gifted new bikes on Saturday to help them ride into the holiday season.
In total, 100 bikes were given away. All the bikes were made possible by a partnership between Cooper Park Houses, National Grid and Bike New York.
"So often when a child gets a gift, they open it up and they play with for a little while, but a bicycle has staying power. You're going to use that day after day," said Bike New York chief development officer Bev Lacy.
The complex's residents council chose the children who were gifted the bikes. The NYPD was also present to register the bike serial numbers. If a bike gets lost or stolen and then found, the serial number will help reunite the bike with the child.
The children also received a free helmet and lock.
