Residents and officials in Riverdale have been fighting against a proposed homeless shelter in their community since last fall.
When the Department of Social Services and Department of Homeless Services notified the neighborhood about a men’s shelter coming to 6661 Broadway, the idea was opposed by many.
Bronx Councilmember Eric Dinowitz says they want transparency in the proposed $195 million contact with the city, the nonprofit involved and the displacement of business on the block.
"We expect our tax dollars to work for us...We expect the people who need support...Are actually getting the support they need and deserve," said Dinowitz.
The Department of Social Services and Department of Homeless Services says that there isn’t a facility like this in the community and 130 New Yorkers will be able to get high quality transitional housing and support services from the African American Planning Commission, the nonprofit operating the shelter.
The nonprofit has drawn skepticism from the community.
Inna Sobel worries about the safety of the neighborhood, despite the promises of 24/7 security.
"There's concerns for the community, there's concerns for the people that are supposedly going to be in the shelter, we have so many little kids and teenagers and single women in the community," says Sobel.
Councilmember Dinowitz says they've sent a letter to the Department of Investigation asking them to look into the proposed shelter as well as the nonprofit's relationship to the city.
