Salons are getting flooded with calls as the tentative date for reopening, May 20, gets closer.
David Mac Hair and Color in Fairfield has installed Plexiglas dividers to separate the customers from the front desk. It also installed shower curtains to separate its 18 stylists.
Every station also has a plastic face mask, as well as Purell and Barbicide to kill any germs.
The salon may install more safety measures, depending on Gov. Ned Lamont's orders.
"I'm waiting for their final call, and then we'll put it all together. We'll probably have to work quickly," owner David Macauda says.
Lamont announced May 20 as a soft opening date for salons if COVID-19 hospitalizations keep dropping.
"It's tougher to enforce social distancing in an environment like that, but based upon what we've seen in Georgia and other places, people aren't flooding in," he says. "People are doing it by appointment."
Some stylists say it's too early to reopen. One salon owner's online petition has gotten more than 1,000 signatures.
The reopening is tentative, and Lamont's office has not released guidelines on how the salons will have to operate.
Lamont says he will outline specific reopening guidelines for salons in about a week.
