The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced Sunday night that all lanes of I-95 over Saugatuck Avenue near Exit 17 in Westport have reopened.
The DOT successfully completed work on the southbound side of the bridge this weekend -- two weeks ago, they completed work on the northbound side.
Project engineer Mike Rosenblatt says the work this weekend was a part of the second phase of their lateral slide. The northbound side was used to move traffic in both directions with a detour for the on and off ramps at Exit 17. The DOT asked drivers to avoid the area while they worked.
"The heavier congestion will be when we start to reopen the highway," says Rosenblatt.
During work on the northside of the roadway, they managed to reopen hours ahead of schedule, which they have now done for the southside as well.
The next move will be more safety improvements.
"We're making wider shoulders and wider medians, there's a new drainage structure going through the median,” says Rosenblatt. “Then sometime this winter, we'll shift to the outside, redo the shoulders, new guardrail."
Rosenblatt says the project is targeted for completion by late Nov. 2024.
