Loved ones remembered Melquain Anderson, a Brooklyn man who was killed in 2017, with the second annual scholarship fundraising event in his name.

Anderson was fatally shot while waiting for a bus outside of the Farragut Houses. He was 27 years old and left behind a daughter who he never had a chance to meet.

The family says they want to spread a message of anti-gun violence in hopes of stopping senseless deaths.

Each year, they give $1,000 to a John Jay student with a 2.0 GPA or under. To be eligible, students have to write an essay about their commitment to serving others, their interest in sociology and how the money will contribute to their academic and professional success.

Anderson’s mother told News 12 she plans to hold many more events as a way to keep Melquain’s legacy alive.
