Senior citizens who live at NYCHA's Middletown Plaza are calling on the agency to address issues in their building.
Frustrated tenants rallied Monday at the building on Middletown Road. They say their automatic doors have been out of order for more than five months, and residents say it's especially problematic for residents with canes and wheelchairs.
Underscoring that issue, while the protest was going on paramedics were working to get a patient out of the building, and a tenant had to hold the doors open for them.
Tenants say other issues include broken bathrooms, keys that don't work and problems with the lobby ceiling. They say they have reached out to NYCHA for help, but they feel that the issues have gone unresolved.
"We pay taxes and they are acting like we don't matter, and we are letting them know today: yes we do," said Rev. Marilyn Oliver, the tenant association president.
News 12 contacted NYCHA and was told in response that the building's doors are "operational and secure," although the button that controls the automatic feature needs to be replaced by a vendor. The agency says that repairs will be made as soon as possible.
It also says that staff have determined there are no active leaks in the building's lobby.
