Sonia Manzano, the retired actress who portrayed Maria on "Sesame Street," was honored Friday for being a trailblazer as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
During her address at Medgar Evers College, Manzano spoke of becoming one of the first Latinas on TV and growing up in the South Bronx.
"In 1969, you did not see people of color on television," said Manzano.
Manzano became the beloved character Maria at age 21 and helped other kids fill the void she felt as a child.
