Here’s what you need to know:
A HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK is in effect Friday evening. Hurricane Erin will make its closest approach Thursday night into Friday bringing life-threatening rip currents to the ocean facing beaches in Brooklyn and Queens.
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY is in effect through 8 p.m. Friday. Large waves of 4 to 13 feet are expected through Friday. Swimming at NYC beaches is prohibited due to Hurricane Erin through tomorrow.
  • It's cool, cloudy and breezy this morning. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 60s.
  • Today will be another cooler than normal day with plenty of clouds, widespread periods of steady rain and breezy conditions. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s.
  • An approaching cold front will bring widespread steady rain after 1 p.m. through 7 a.m. Thursday morning. This is not associated with Hurricane Erin. Based on the current position of Hurricane Erin, the front will stall nearby slowing down the showers and thunderstorms along the front. There's a low risk for isolated flash flooding in poor drainage and low-lying areas this evening. There’s still some uncertainty on where the exact location the storms will stall. Stay tuned for updates.
  • Hurricane Erin will make its closest approach offshore Thursday night into Friday morning as a category two hurricane. It will bring gusty winds on Thursday afternoon up to 35mph. Friday will be sunny, warm and breezy. This weekend will be in the low 80s with increasing humidity. Our next chance of rain is Sunday evening. Stay tuned for updates.
A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH is in effect through Thursday evening. 1-2ft of inundation above ground level possible in the most vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. Widespread moderate flooding is expected. There's also a threat for beach flooding, beach erosion and escarpment during high tide through Friday morning.
TRACKING THE TROPICS: We're currently monitoring three areas of interest in the Atlantic basin. Hurricane Erin is currently a category two hurricane and will intensify again as a major category three hurricane as it moves Northwest. Erin will bring life-threatening rip currents, potentially minor coastal flooding during high tide, windy conditions and beach erosion to our ocean facing beaches today through Friday. The other tropical disturbance have a medium chance of further development in the central tropical Atlantic over the next 7 days. This storm should be watched closely as it could become our next named storm this weekend and possibly impact parts of the Leeward Islands on Friday. There's another tropical wave off the coast of Africa that has a low chance of development. Stay tuned for updates!
