Hall to close after board claims it brings crime to neighborhood
Community members are applauding a business owner’s decision to shut down after they say the establishment was bringing crime to the neighborhood.
For outsiders, the Sanctuary Grand Hall looked like an ideal place for a family party.
The hall's social media pages feature baby showers and children’s event, but neighbors say after dark it brought a very different crowd.
Community leaders say they had complained to police about the continuous fighting and underage drinking in the hall, which many believe led to the shooting of two men on Webster Avenue Sunday morning, just steps from the hall.
The crime investigation stretched down six blocks near Fordham Road where the shooting victims crashed against a livery cab. The incident prompted the community activists to call on the business to shut down.
News 12 spoke with the landlord of the building who has confirmed the hall has decided to close Monday.
Activists say it is a small victory.
Members from Community Board 7 say they plan to call on elected officials to enact tougher penalties for party halls involved in illegal activities.
