Nahjim Luke, the person who police say shot and killed 17-year-old Brandon Hendricks in June 2020, took the stand as his trial began this week.

Hendricks was a basketball phenom and a cherished member of his community. His mother, Eve Hendricks, received the call that her son was struck by a stray bullet on June 28, 2020.

“It’s been four years, and nothing has changed,” said Eve Hendricks. “I still feel like the day I got the call.”

Eve Hendricks wore a picture of her late son’s face around her neck as she entered the courtroom. She says she hopes Luke, who faces murder and manslaughter charges, faces the maximum sentence.

Luke’s trial will continue next week.
