Some educators are concerned as many students are returning to the classroom today for the first time since the Thanksgiving break.

Multiple teachers unions are coming forward arguing for a "holiday pause" and taking a break from in-person learning in order to slow the spread of the virus.

In Yonkers, all schools are remote through Wednesday out of an abundance of caution. This will also give the district time to complete the state's required COVID-19 testing for in-person learning in yellow zones.

But teachers in other districts are calling on much longer breaks. Union leaders in the White Plains school district are asking for a two-week pause to allow for time to pass after Thanksgiving.

White Plains Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Ricca says while all options are on the table, his priority is keeping kids learning in person.

The president of the Greenburgh-North Castle union says remote learning through mid-January is necessary to keep everyone healthy.

Some Hudson Valley school districts have already announced they'll be all remote until January including North Rockland, Peekskill and Port Chester.
