New York City is under a heat alert Tuesday for temperatures in the 90s.
Here are some tips on how to stay cool on hot days:
  • Avoid doing activities outside during the sun’s peak hours, which are between 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you need to walk your dogs, the best time to do it is early in the morning or in the evenings.
  • If you do need to be outside, make sure you stay hydrated. That means drinking water every 15 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Also, take breaks in the shade when you can.
  • Make sure to be protected against the sun by wearing hats, lightweight clothing and sunscreen.
  • Using air conditioning? Try to keep the settings at low to conserve energy and keep those shades and curtains closed so your home stays cool.
Con Edison is encouraging people to limit their energy usage to prevent any possible power outages.
