Transit officials in Bridgeport say exterminators were called in last week to get rid of a bedbug problem in an area of the Bridgeport Transportation Center.
In a video shared to Facebook by Sheila Clyburn Thursday, a sign can be seen above a bench that says “Don’t Sit!! Bed bugs!!”
Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) says they didn't put up the warning signs, but they did cordon off the area and bring pest control out the next day. Officials say bedbug reports are rare.
"To put a little perspective on it, we're talking about a couple of reports a year on this,” says Doug Holcomb, the GBT CEO. “The trick is to really take care of it right away and not let it linger."
GBT says buses go through two rounds of cleaning every night. They say they plan to add security to the transportation center to keep homeless people from sleeping on the benches.
Holcomb says staff are working on a program with the Bridgeport Rescue Mission to help the homeless population.
News 12 reached out to the Bridgeport Health Department, but a city spokesperson did not return phone calls.
