Supporters of Anthony Nelson rallied outside the Bronx Hall of Justice where Nelson’s alleged assaulter was scheduled to appear on Tuesday.
Transit workers and their families rallied together to call for the maximum penalty to be given in the assault case of Nelson. Protesters held up signs with his face bruised from the recent assault.
The defendant, Alexander Wright, is accused of assaulting Nelson last week after two passengers complained to Nelson that Wright was harassing riders outside the Pelham Bay Park station.
When Nelson tried to help, his union says Wright attacked the 35-year-old, leaving him with a broken nose and collarbone.
Transport Workers Union Local 100 joined Nelson’s mother to call for the maximum sentence of seven years in prison for assault on an MTA employee.
Wright is in jail currently on $5,000 bail, which Nelson’s family says is not enough considering he is getting his second surgery today for his injuries.
Wright is scheduled to appear before a judge this Friday.
