Transit Workers Union asks for more police on platforms
In September, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a plan to add 500 more police officers to work with the MTA--now the Transit Workers Union is asking for even more officers on the platforms.
Advocates cited an overall decline in subway crime over the past years but a recent uptick in certain violent crimes like misdemeanor assaults. The TWU says that increase includes more assaults on transit workers.
"We want our police officers that are patrolling system to have body cameras," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
The Brooklyn borough presidents also says he wants to partner with local businesses--calling it 'Operation Safe Shopper'--using his funds to place cameras on stores pointing toward subways.
"Passengers want police presence. They want clean efficient subway systems," said Adams.
With those efforts combined, supporters say it would be easier to catch the Seventh Avenue subway shooter, who's still on the loose.
