Bronx buses will now be able to catch illegal driving behavior with their newly installed cameras, transportation officials say.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says nearly 50,000 automated bus lane enforcement (ABLE) violations have been issued this year alone.
The new ABLE camera system installed will capture license plate information, photos and videos of drivers holding up commuters trying to get to their destinations.
The initiative is to ensure a faster and safer commute without illegally parked drivers in the way. Over 500 ABLE cameras were installed in buses across the boroughs.
The Department of Transportation says it will issue a warning to drivers for the first 60 days. Drivers who violate these rules during enforcement periods could receive a summons with fines beginning at $50 and up to $250 for repeat offenders.
