The rising costs of fuel are already making it more expensive to fill up our cars and heat our homes; now it's going to cost even more just to send a package.

The United States Postal Service announced it is adding a temporary 8% surcharge to certain services to account for rising transportation costs, the agency said yesterday.

"This temporary price adjustment will provide needed flexibility for the Postal Service by helping to ensure that the actual costs of doing business are covered, as required by Congress," the post office wrote in its announcement.

The planned price change would affect base postage prices on both retail and commercial domestic competitive products, including Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select.

No other products or services would be affected, including First-Class Stamps.

The fees would go into effect on April 26 and would remain in place until Jan. 17, 2027, if given the final approval by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

The USPS said the Governors of the Postal Service would review its decision to determine if a long-term financial approach is needed.

Gas prices have soared since the war with Iran began last month.

The average gas price on Long Island is $3.88 a gallon, up 17 cents compared to this time last week and up $1.02 from this time last month, according to AAA.
