Volunteers from the city’s top law firms and
their families gathered at Hunts Point Food Distribution Center to pack over
19,000 pounds of food for a program that feeds seniors.
The Justice Served campaign is an annual
effort led by the legal community and the Food Bank for New York City to
combat hunger throughout the city.
Organizers say each box the volunteers
prepared carries 9 meals tailored to the needs of senior communities.
According to Food Bank for New York City, an
estimated 1.6 million New Yorkers are food insecure. The problem
has been exacerbated by the end of pandemic-era
programs such as SNAP allotments. It
has forced some New Yorkers to make difficult
decisions like paying rent or feeding their families.
The Justice Served campaign has
been running for eight consecutive years.
"I wish this wasn't a need in this
community, but I'm happy to be a part of this,” said one volunteer.
