The Bronx is continuing to struggle with the highest unemployment rate in the city, and West Farms has been hurt particularly hard.
According to the New York State Department of Labor, New York City has an 11.8% unemployment rate, while the Bronx unemployment rate stands at 16%.
The West Farms neighborhood has a 26% unemployment rate, according to the state's Department of Labor.
The neighborhood struggled before the pandemic with higher unemployment rates. Service industry workers, immigrants and restaurants workers have been losing jobs even more since March.
Assemblywoman Karines Reyes says that a lot of the businesses are ones that communities rely on.
"There is a lot of desperation," Reyes says. "And I think that's really, really difficult to try and contend with."
Reyes says the people in the area are also frustrated with remote learning and not being able to pay their rent.
