Nearly 40 cats were found living in deplorable conditions Tuesday inside a White Plains apartment, the Westchester SPCA said.

In a post on social media, the nonprofit said the Humane Law Enforcement Unit was participating in a “horrific hoarding rescue” after receiving a call about a “deathly smell” coming from the apartment.

The posts did not specify exactly where the apartment was or if any arrests were made.

The cats were dehydrated, and most were sick and suffering with severe upper respiratory and eye infections.

“One of the cats just gave birth to a tiny kitten who is clinging to life and was found on the cold floor, living in mounds of feces,” the SPCA posted. “Food and water stations have been set up and our team will not stop until every single cat is rescued.”

The SPCA says it anticipates the rescue will take a few days.
