A Stamford high school is mourning the loss of one of its student-athletes.

Police say Jordan Martinez, from Westhill High School, was behind the wheel when he crashed into a pole on Route 1 in Greenwich Saturday night.

The Westhill High School football team tweeted out a photo of Jordan Martinez on Sunday.

The team said, “It breaks our heart to say that our teammate and beloved friend Jordan Martinez passed away last night. Our hearts are with his family and friends."

A memorial with candles was set up on East Putnam Avenue, the site of the fatal crash.

Loved ones say Martinez was a great teammate and known for his smile, sense of humor and advice.

“Always happy, always positive, even on my stressful days he would say, ‘Coach, smile.’ So, I know he is probably saying that right now,” says Aland Joseph, Westhill High School's football coach.

This week would have been the Vikings’ first day back together after several frustrating weeks in quarantine.

A friend who rushed to the scene of the accident told News 12 that Martinez was conscious and talking at the time, so he was stunned to learn he had died.

"He's been my longtime friend since sixth grade. Grew up playing football with him and…he always had a smile on his face,” says senior Nasir Thornton.

Greenwich police have not determined the cause of the crash. They say more information on the investigation will be released Wednesday.
