Mayor Eric Adams is facing five federal charges, including wire fraud and bribery. This raises concerns about his ability to continue leading the city. So, what happens next?

Legal experts say Adams will need to surrender to authorities for booking, followed by an initial appearance and a bond hearing. Former Justice Department prosecutor Richard Serafini expects Adams to plead not guilty, which could lead to a jury trial. He says a date is typically set within the next six months.

"My day-to-day will not change," said Adams. But political science professor Christopher Malone argues it will be difficult for him to effectively manage the city while facing legal battles.

If Adams is unable to serve, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would temporarily take over as mayor. A special election would be held 80 days later to elect a permanent replacement, who would finish Adams' term through the next election in November 2025.
